Since returning from the August recess, the U.S Congress and the White House have seen a flurry of activity, including new budget talks and discussions regarding the Affordable Healthcare Act leading to the government shutdown. Throughout this time, 3 Click Solutions has been active in meeting with key members and staff of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives on a variety of client issues.

·      In September and October we hosted receptions at Patrick Murphy’s townhouse for Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maryland State Representative Heather Mizeur and Montana Lt. Gov. John Walsh.

·      3 Click has been engaged with the DC-based innovative technology incubator, 1776.  Patrick Murphy was part of a team that helped to prepare a select group of energy startups for their presentations in the 1776 Challenge Cup.

·      3 Click has been actively engaged with Peers, the international sharing economy organization based out of San Francisco. This culminated in 3 Click hosting the first DC event for Peers (www.Peers.org), which included Congressional staff, startup founders, investors and community representatives.

As seen in Politico on October 17:

PEERS KICKS OFF D.C. PRESENCE: Peers, the San Francisco-based grass-roots nonprofit, launched its D.C. presence Wednesday night at a reception and dinner hosted by 3 Click Solutions' Patrick Murphy at his Capitol Hill townhouse. The event was one of 100 dinners worldwide to promote the sharing economy. Peers' members include leaders in the field such as Getaround, AirBnB, LiquidSpace, Taskrabbit, Lyft, Mosaic and Vayable. Murphy launched the Collaborative Economy Coalition at the Democratic National Convention in 2012, which is a companion organization to Peers.

Washington, D.C.– 3 Click Solutions, TrustCloud, LiquidSpace and others have formally launched the Collaborative Economy Coalition (CEC). San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and New York Congressman Joe Crowley introduced the coalition at a formal kickoff during the Democratic National Convention.

As champions of innovation in San Francisco and New York City, Mayor Lee and Congressman Crowley expressed their commitment to working with the CEC to help promote the new economy. The two leaders both applauded the other’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurialism, and pleased the crowd throughout with good-spirited tongue-in-cheek suggestions about which city was leading the race in innovation. As Chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Technology and Innovation Task Force, Mayor Lee is able to work with mayors throughout the country to explore policies that work for cities and ensure that innovative companies have the opportunity to thrive across America.

Patrick Murphy, Principal at 3 Click Solutions and CEC Co-Founder announced the organization’s three goals: “The coalition will educate the public and policy makers about the Collaborative Economy; advocate for fair and sensible policies for Collaborative Consumption startups (CollCons); and encourage best practices regarding trust, safety and user experience.” TrustCloud is one such CollCon startup. “Managing community trust and insurance risk is imperative to the growth of peer-to-peer marketplaces. The CEC empowers sharing companies by helping us stay informed of rapidly evolving policies that affect our business,” said Xin Chung, TrustCloud’s Co-Founder.

Local, State and National Leaders Participate

In addition to CollCon and corporate business leaders, the following government and political leaders were also in attendance: President of the New Jersey State Senate, Stephen Sweeney; Speaker of the New Jersey State Assembly, Sheila Oliver; Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives, Shap Smith; Executive Director of Democratic Municipal Officials, Barbara Moore; Director of the American Sustainable Business Council, Richard Eidlin; Senior Director of Stakeholder Advocacy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Andrew Kovalcin; and Chicago Alderman, Joe Moore. 3 Click Solutions, a leading technology-focused government relations firm based in Washington, D.C, sponsored the event and will serve as the CEC’s managing body.

Kymberly Messersmith, formerly VP of State Government Affairs at American Express is a CEC Co-Founder and Senior Advisor at 3 Click Solutions. Messersmith explains: “3 Click is uniquely qualified to advance and advocate on behalf of the innovation economy, both because of our expertise in the tech space and because our wide network of allies across cities, state capitols and in Washington, D.C.”

What Is The Collaborative Economy?

Collaborative Consumption was named “One of the 10 Ideas That Will Change the World” by Time Magazine. Originally coined by Rachel Botsman in her groundbreaking book What’s Mine is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption. Collaborative Consumption is an economic phenomenon that is revitalizing the American economy by empowering individuals and communities to rent, sell, lend and share goods and services through seamless online platforms and mobile applications (apps).

Good for Families: CollCons create new revenue streams for Americans. Families across the country have dramatically increased their yearly income by renting out an extra car, space in their driveway, or vacation home. Neal Gorenflo, Founder of Shareable.net explains, “Americans are earning and saving tens of thousands of dollars through sharing. My family alone saved $17,000 last year by sharing childcare, transportation, finance, travel, and clothes.  At Shareable.net we track news, thought leadership, and how-tos on the burgeoning sharing economy.  We applaud efforts to educate government about a sector that helps students, working families, and anyone struggling to make ends meet.”

Good for Local Communities: CollCons are also creating more sustainable, efficient, and entrepreneurially dynamic communities. Peer-to-Peer carsharing companies are taking additional cars off the road while injecting new liquidity directly into the local economy. LiquidSpace, a platform to rent unused office space, recently formed a partnership with the municipal governments of Santa Cruz, Palo Alto and San Francisco. By listing 27 available workspaces in 16 government buildings, the cities are able to generate additional revenue and citizens have benefited from having more space for community events and young businesses. And crowd funding platforms like Start Some Good empower citizens with the capital they need to turn their ideas into realities.

Good for Consumers: Collaborative platforms and mobile apps provide consumers greater choice and more competitive prices. Whether it’s renting a vacation home, evening wear, mountain bikes, your dream wedding event space, or the muscle car you’ve already dreamed of driving; the Collaborative Economy provides Americans affordable access to high quality goods and services.

The CEC will build upon the energy created by the launch to continue to spearhead the advancement of America’s new innovation economy. Patrick Murphy, CEC Co-Founder explains, “We have a lot of work to do, but our story is an easy one to tell. Our companies are creating a sustainable private sector stimulus: turning millions of Americans into micro-entrepreneurs by empowering them to generate income from the assets and skills they already possess. That’s something Republicans and Democrats alike should support.”

Mayor Lee and Congressman Crowley are fully committed to supporting the new economy as well as showing leaders across the country how they too can revitalize their communities and empower their citizens. As the collaborative economy continues to grow, develop and benefit Americans, the Coalition and its members will be at the forefront in helping to ensure a better tomorrow.

CollCons interested in joining the Collaborative Economy Coalition should visit the CEC website at www.CollaborativeEconomyCoalition.org.
